BACKGROUND TO THE BIRDS OF WAR EXHIBITION
The Birds of War exhibition was initiated to mark the fourth anniversary of the Iraq invasion and to raise awareness about the on-going plight of Iraqi people.
The event was a unique opportunity to view a dynamic collaboration between British and Iraqi artists and their interpretations of the Iraq conflict. The exhibition took place at the Candid Arts Trust Gallery, London in April 2007 and featured over 60 visual artworks.
Some of the work took a satirical stance, and attacked the orchestrators of the war: Bush, Blair, Cheney, Rumsfeld et al. It also looked at the deep sense of loss felt by the Iraqi people, the destruction of their heritage and the unforgivable use and long-term effects of cluster bombs and depleted uranium on the region.
The response to the exhibition from the press and the public was exceptionally good, with many requests for the artists to take the show to other cities.
Proceeds from the auction of Rory Bremner's 'Blair' ears on the opening night went to Medical Aid for Iraqi Children. Our thanks go to VERA Productions for their generous donation of prosthetic artworks, and to Robert Llewellyn for giving us his time and his great auctioneering skills.
The London event was supported by Stop the War Coalition and CND, and we are also indebted to Fineprint, Archos, 2DTV and ePoD UK for all their help in making it possible.
